River Trail - 23
miles from Psalm 23 Camp |
The
Greenbrier River Trail, operated by West Virginia State Parks,
is almost 80 miles long, extending from Marlington southward
to Caldwell, which is about 23 miles from Psalm 23 Camp.
It
served as a railroad beginning about 1900 to serve the booming
timber industry of that time. The trail passes through numerous
small towns and crosses 35 bridges and goes through 2 tunnels
as it winds its way along the valley. Throughout much of its
length, the Trail is directly adjacent to the beautiful Greenbrier
River and is surrounded by mountains.
It
has a grade of less than 1%(near level) throughout its length
and the surface is generally hard packed, but varies from
rough to fine gravel. Consequently, although there are few
problems for hikers, bicyclists will have to adjust their
riding styles and anticipated travel times accordingly. Bicycles
with large tires are recommended.
Restroom
facilities and approved drinking water sources have been developed
along the Trail. Several "primitive" camping sites
are now being developed near or adjacent to the Trail.
This
easy riding trail is especially good for those who want to
enjoy the scenic beauty in a relaxing way. Guests at Psalm
23 Camp may wish to consider the southern end of the trail
for possible one-day trips.
For
a more rugged ride, one of the outfitters listed below will
likely give you several options. Also, the 80-mile trail provides
the opportunity for longer rides including overnight adventures.

Trail - 3 miles from Psalm 23
camp |
While
this is normally designated as a hiking trail, one four-mile
section near Psalm 23 Camp is good for biking because it is
located on an old Jeep trail, or fire trail, through the Jefferson
National Forrest.
Bikers
can access the trail directly from Psalm 23 Camp with a two-mile
trek up Peters Mountain on Crowder Road, one mile down the
other side to the Alleghany Trail. The section suitable for
biking would end four miles south west near the top of the
mountain. Bikers could be picked up at the mountain top parking
lot. Or, bikers could continue on six miles of paved road
back to camp.
