Ride through the
dark passages of an authentic vintage coal mine delved 500-feet
beneath the hillsides of New River Park in Beckley, West Virginia
(WV).
Passengers are carried through
the mine in authentic "man cars" of the kind that
carried miners from the mine entrance to section of mine they
were "working." Exhibits throughout explore the
history of low-seam coal mining from hand-loadin' days into
the era of modern mechanization.
Our guides are veteran miners
and can provide detailed answers and firsthand accounts. Listed
on the National Register of Historic Places, the mine was
opened by the Phillips family in the late 1800s, one of many
small family-owned operations of that period. It was donated
to the City of Beckley for use as an exhibition mine in 1953.
Be sure to bring a jacket: the
temperature in the mine is a chilly 58-degrees year-round.
