Several companies serve as outfitters for rafting on the New River. All of them have qualified guides, one of which rides in each raft of about eight people.

It is the responsibility of each church group to make arrangements with the rafting company.

Reserve early! If you have an interest in rafting it is important to contact the companies early to make your reservation.

Psalm 23 Camp recommends taking the express trip and schedule it for afternoon. This trip is about $20 per person cheaper than an all day trip and yet it still covers the most exciting portion (the Lower New) of the river.

Another reason we recommend an afternoon trip is because morning trips start too early for campers to have breakfast at Psalm 23 Camp before leaving for the river.

We also recommend you go early enough to spend some time at the New River Gorge visitor center. Typically a group leaves Psalm 23 Camp about 10:00 a.m. on Friday, eat a picnic lunch (packed at camp), visit the visitor center, and then go to the rafting company. After the trip on the river the group will usually eat the evening meal at one of several restaurants in the Lansing, Oak Hill, Fayette, Beckley area before returning to camp that evening. Arrival at camp is usually after 9:00 p.m.

Although the express trip is more suitable for most groups, some may wish to get more infomation to throughly compare the express and all-day trips.

The New River is probably the most popular whitewater rafting place east of the Rocky Mountains. The elevation drop in one 13-mile stretch of the river is twice as much as the Mississippi River drops in its entire length.

The Lower New has several class II, III, and IV rapids making it a great experience for the experienced rafter, yet safe for the first-timer.

The scenic beauty in the 1000 ft deep New River Gorge is another factor that makes this trip so enjoyable.
