| Cass
Scenic Railroad - 85
miles from Psalm 23 Camp |
The
Cass Scenic Railroad is the same line built in1901 to haul
lumber to the mill in Cass. The locomotives are the same Shay
locomotives used in Cass, and the passenger cars are old logging
flat-cars refurbished and made into passenger cars.
Two
different trips are available:
-
Cass
to Whittaker Station - this four-mile, 1.5 hour round
trip allows visitors a chance to eat lunch there (pack
your own or purchase there) and visit a restored logging
camp with equipment used for logging in the 1940's. This
includes a tower skidder, one of only two examples left
in the world. This railcar-mounted machine carried logs
out of the woods on aerial cables high in the air for
a distance of more than a half mile.
-
Cass
to Bald Knob - this is an 11-mile, 4.5 hour round
trip to the highest point in West Virginia at 4,842 feet.
The climate at Bald Knob is similar to Canada and has
plants typical to northern climates. This trip also includes
the Whittaker Station stop.

| New
River Train Excursions |
Since
the first New River Train excursion in 1968, the annual outing
through the scenic New River Gorge during the height of Fall
colors has grown to attract thousands each year. The New River
Train makes its way through the New River Gorge passing several
ghost towns, dozens of old coal mining sites, and numerous
scenic spots hidden deep in the within the gorge.
Timed
to coincide with the expected peak of fall colors in the New
River Gorge, the first New River Train excursions run between
Huntington, WV and Hinton, WV. during the some weekends in
October.
The railroad
line through the New River Gorge hugs along a narrow ledge
near the bottom of the Gorge, and passengers are at times
a 100 feet or more above the river level where they can enjoy
a view of the river and the mountain peaks that reach as much
as 1300 feet above the river. One of the most beautiful scenes
from the train's higher vantage point is of Sandstone Falls,
very close to the train's near destination point of Hinton,
West Virginia.
