Slam Dunk The PC Crowd April 19, 2004. Danny Gathings, a star basketball player for High Point University, made a slam dunk at the Vines Center on the Liberty University campus on April 14. The basketball season was over, and it was not a basketball that he slam dunked. Gathings did a very honorable thing at the LU convocation gathering of Liberty's students and staff; he presented Larry Blair, LU's freshman star with a trophy Gathings thought Blair deserved. Gathings had been presented the Big South Tournament's MVP award in the same building on March 6. He didn't think he deserved the award, but thought Blair did, so he made arrangements through his own coach and LU officials to present the trophy to Larry Blair. The LU convocation crowd gave Gathings an extended standing ovation, which indeed was very appropriate. Danny Gathings has shown a lot of character with this action. A spin off effect of Gathings giving the award to Blair shows how utterly ridiculous the politically correct crowd (committee, team, or whatever) was who selected Gathings in the first place. On March 8 I wrote an account of the final game as an eye witness to the gross error made by those who made the decision. (That March 8 piece is shown below). In that writing I was careful to avoid mentioning Gathings name, because he was not the decision maker. Indirectly, his giving the trophy to Blair was an offhanded "in your face" action toward the ones who selected him as MVP, although I doubt he meant it to be such. So, Danny Gathings made a slam dunk with respect to his own character, and he made a slam dunk against the PC crowd who chose him as MVP in the Big South Tournament......and that's .........My Biased Opinion Puke From Duke April 7, 2004. Duke University is sick! No, I'm not talking about the fact the men's and women's basketball teams failed to make the Final Four. Either would have made that distinction had they won one more game. While Duke is one of my favorite teams, primarily because of Coach K, I am having trouble remaining a fan of a university that has gone so far astray from its Christian foundation. The latest comes from a report by WorldNetDaily.com that Duke wants to end its relationship with the local YMCA if that organization doesn't allow same-sex couples from Duke to get the Y's family membership rate. How ridiculous does it get when a school established by a church denomination evolves into such an ungodly environment? Of course the Methodist denomination is to be condemned more so than the University itself. And what about the jury of 13 Methodist ministers who met last month and found a lesbian Methodist pastor not guilty of breaking church law because of her lesbian relationship? Eleven of the 13 found her not guilty and two were undecided. Undecided, eh? Oh boy, what kind of anointing covers those people anyway? Speaking of Duke and lesbians, a Methodist minister told me several years ago that the seminary at Duke was a magnet for lesbians. ??? Duke is not alone. The Methodists are not alone. However, any organization that has rejected the Bible and its teaching should be soundly rejected by Christians. If the leadership has left the Bible, the Christians associated with such an organization should leave.........and that's... .........My Biased Opinion PCMVP March 8, 2004. I love college basketball and I hate political correctness. Two days ago Glenda and I sat in the stands of the Vines Center at Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA to watch one of the most enjoyable basketball tournament games I have ever seen. Our team literally blew the other team out of the water with a 89-44 win. There is nothing like seeing your team win a championship game, and it is just more exciting to see them to squash the opponent. A surprise came after the game when a member of the other team (the one that lost by 45 points) was chosen to receive the Most Valuable Player award. I thought, "How could that be?" It becomes more questionable when you realize the MVP only scored 7 points in the game; that's right, s-e-v-e-n points! Think about it. Think of the shellackin' High Point College would have likely gotten had their most valuable player not been in the game! When I got home I did a little research on the Internet because I figured the MVP must have had a couple fantastic tournament games prior to the final game. NOPE, he didn't. He scored a total of 35 points in the whole tournament, including the 7 in the final game; that's less than 12 points per game. By contrast, Liberty's Larry Blair scored 29 points in the final game including a record seven three-pointers. Note that the MVP scored seven points and Blair scored seven 3-pointers. Blair scored a three-game total of 63 points in tournament play vs. 35 for the MVP. I don't know who selected the MVP for the Big South Tournament, but I do know they got it wrong. Larry Blair is a freshman and the chosen MVP was a senior. I suspect some-milque toast liberals decided, "We need to take turns when we pass out these awards and it's not fair to give the award to a freshman, and besides Liberty won the tournament and we can make the MVP a consolation prize, and besides he played hard even though the statistics don't show he accomplished anything." Maybe that didn't happen, but nevertheless that's....... .........My Biased Opinion
Passion Against The Passion March 1, 2004. I have not seen Mel Gibson's movie "The Passion of The Christ" as of this date, but one thing is certain in my mind. In my soon to be 63 years of living I have never witnessed a single thing that brought the demons out of the woodwork like this film has. Gibson was harshly criticized for a year prior to the film's release on February 25. Once the film was shown in theaters across the nation the criticism escalated to the point that it is clear that many of the elites in news reporting are basically "God haters". The hypocrisy of the Hollywood crowd is stunning. All attempts to blackball Gibson, accusations of anti-Semitism, calling the movie too violent, accusations that he is making money off Jesus' death, etc. are clear messages that the name above all names is making sinners uncomfortable. As a single issue within a relatively small window of one year, this film has got to be a defining moment in our country's history. The sheep and the goats are going separate ways. The film, in effect, has brought into focus the underlying problem of how our country has become divided between Bible believing people and those who do not have such beliefs. Two other divisive issues that have evolved over many years deserve our attention. Abortion and homosexuality are two that are polarizing the sheep and the goats. It is a great time to be a Christian; the Bible says we will be persecuted, but think of the mission field we have with so many in our culture who need God's love and forgiveness. We also need to be reminded that repentance is a very necessary part of salvation. The important question is, "Do we have a passion to tell the truth, to present the Gospel to a people so much in need of the Savior?" The film itself may not directly affect the lost, but it can be an instrument for lighting fires of passion within you and me to witness to others.......and that's .....................My Biased Opinion |
